DB Cup Title Defence on Track after Win vs. City

19th November 2019

Our Dennis Broad Cup boys made it 9 wins in their last 10 matches including last season's Grand Final when they took down Newcastle City in a close encounter on Sunday in their round 2 fixture.

City batted first, and opener David Smith scored an impressive 83*, to help City post a solid 3/141 on a slow outfield. Robert Hill (1/21 off 4) and Tommy Sheehan (1/20 off 4) were crucial in keeping the score down with good tight bowling.

The chase got off to an absolute flyer, with Matt Onslow scoring a brilliant 73 off 39 balls to put us in the box seat. Onslow's innings backed up his 61* against Wallsend in round 1 as he stamped his dominance on this competition.

With the wicket of Onslow with the score on 99, it fell apart for our guys, with constant wickets making what should have been an easy chase into a battle. Going into the final 2 overs, we needed 12 to win with 3 wickets in hand. Michael Ying Sing showed a cool head to get us over the line with 2 wickets and 2 balls to spare.

The under 21s also continued their recent form on Sunday, but for all the wrong reasons as they were outclassed by a strong City side. We were rolled for 70, which was chased down in the 9th over. 15 year old Jimmy Skelly provided the only highlight for the day, with a great over of off spin showing his potential against 1st Grade quality batsmen.

Round 3 of these competitions continues on the 1st of December, with this Sunday reserved for the Royce McCormack Cup final (2nd Grade One-Day Cup), where we host Merewether at Waratah Oval.

And don't forget that our Women are playing host to Wests tonight from 5pm in their T20 Semi-Final.

Big week for Waratah ahead!
