Weekend Wrap - Winning Start for 5 Waratah Sides

Nathan Hudson

Finally the cricket season kicked of for our boys, and 5 of our 7 sides started the season with a win, with 4ths going down in a close one and 1sts being outclassed by Hamilton-Wickham.

1st Grade won the toss and batted against Hamwicks, and apart from a 53 run partnership between skipper Nathan Hudson (35) and Blake Morley (19), they struggled throughout the innings to post 79, including a collapse of 6-2 to close the innings. The bowlers performed better, but without any runs on the board were never realistically a chance. Ben Sullivan and Jonty Durrheim picked up wickets, and Ben Crebert came agonizingly close to picking up a wicket on debut.

Dean Marjoribanks also won the toss and batted in 2nds, but were 3/15 in the 4th over. Kieran Brackenbury (21) and Hamish Macqueen (22) then worked hard to get us back on track, allowing the middle order to cash in late. Olivier Koehn (23) and James Foster (28*) batted well and the tail wagged nicely to get our boys up to 167 at the close of the innings. William Dundas (1/20) and David Sutherland (4/12) bowled well in tandem to start our innings. At drinks the game was evenly poised before Hamish Macqueen (5/37) got involved in a big way to combine with Sutho and roll Hamwicks for 108.

Justin Steadman

Robert Redpath didn't miss a beat in backing up his 4th grade premiership win by opening up the year with 3/29 in 3rds. Newcomer Robert Hill also picked up a wicket in his first game for the club, and Vikram Singh (2/26) bowled well in the middle of the innings to restrict Hamwicks to 152 from the 40 overs. In the chase, skipper Josh Payne (41) and Justin Steadman (39) got the bulk of the runs for a comfortable 6 wicket win.

Rob Hill

4th Grade also bowled first, and restricted Hamwicks to 118 thanks to a 5 wicket haul from Todd Hearne (5/25) and contributions from all of the other bowlers. It should have been an easy chase, but the boys had an innings to forget with only Michael Skelly (29) spending time at the crease. A late flurry from Tom Newman (18) got us close, but his wicket saw us all out for 110 for an 8 run loss.

5ths also had Hamwicks in their fixture, and Rory Guy won the toss and bowled, with Joshua Deakin (2/16) and Max Gilbert (3/23) the chief destroyers as they rolled Hamwicks for 108. Harry Compton (30) and Sam Guy (35) batted well in the chase as we got there 7 down. Ryan Moorcroft (1/23 and 10*) had a good debut for the club to help ensure the win.

The C5s traveled to Warner's Bay for their first game, and Matthew Quinn won the toss and employed his time-honoured tactic of bowling first. It clearly worked a treat as Will Cranney (4/14) cleaned up the top order in his Waratah debut. Anthony Fernandez (2/4) was typically tidy with the ball as Warner's Bay were all out for 69. The chase took a bit longer than expected, with the boys falling to 4/23 before Chad Cook (25*) and Troy McGrath (21*) got the job done.

Bear's Boys also opened the account with a win in D2s at home against Dora Creek. Dora Creek won the toss and batted their full 35 to put on 8/116. Stuart Henderson (3/5) had a great day with the ball and was ably assisted by Andrew Cruckshank (2/15). The chase took 27 overs, with Andrew Crossan (32) and Andrew Isberg (41*) the top scorers to get us there with 3 wickets in hand.
